US President Joe Biden signs the Juneteenth National Holiday bill with Opal Lee attending, June 17 2021

 June 19th, 2023, the US  nation is celebrating Juneteenth as a National Holiday. The celebration is the third  following the event held on Thursday, June 17, 2020,  when US President Joe Biden signed a bill into law, making June 19 a national holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved black Americans. This year, the Juneteenth celebration will focus on "Wave of Freedom" an affirmation of every person's right to equity and dignity.

In 2022, like in 2020, Georgia was expected to play a major role in US politics.  The focus was on the runoff election for the US Senate, between  Rev. Raphael Warnock, a democrat and Hershel Walker, a republican. Rev. Raphael Warnock won, scoring  51.4%, with 99% reporting. The Democrats will havel 51 seats against 49 for the Republicans, hence controlling the US Senate.

Following the 2022 mid-term elections, New York Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, 52, has been elected to be the new Minority Leader of the House of Representatives. He will take over from Nancy Pelosi, 82, on January 3, 2023. With the election, Hakeem Jeffries becomes the First Black Leader in the US Congress.
