Former US President Jimmy Carter has died. He was 100 years old. According to the Carter Center, former President Jimmy Carter died peacefully  at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family after two years in a hospice hospital.  Jimmy Carter  died a year after his wife Rosalynn Carter passed away at 96.  Jimmy Carter, viewed as a role model of former US Presidents,  was the longest living former commander-in-chief in U.S. history.

A well respected former US President, Jimmy Carter, like his late wife, was also known for his dedication to the peace, social justice, charitable and philanthropic causes, during his presidency and after he left the Oval Office.  His stand on social justice was open, long before  became  the president. In January 1977, in  his  inaugural presidential address he said "Because we are free, we can never be indifferent to the fate of freedom elsewhere."

After leaving the White House, following the calling to pursue peace,  social justice, human rights, and environment protection, Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter, a  devout Southern Baptists couple,  traveled the world to play major roles in monitoring elections and working to eradicate tropical diseases ( see here: USA: Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter Dies, at 96.).

Due to that dedication, Former President Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.  In his   Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech,  Jimmy Carter reaffirmed his dedication to human rights and social justice saying: "War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn to live together in peace by killing each other’s children."

In 2007,  Jimmy Carter  worked with Nelson Mandela to found The Elders, a NGO composed of global leaders, with the objectives to advocate for human rights.

Jimmy Carter has also been working with Habitat for Humanity, a Christian charity organization  that helps low class families by  building, renovating and repairing their homes.

Jimmy Carter's Life Marked by Integrity and Commitment to Social Justice and  Human Rights

Jimmy Carter  was born and raised in Plains, Georgia. He attended  the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating  in 1946 and joining the U.S. Navy's submarine service from 1946-1953.  After the US Navy service,  he returned and took care of a  peanut-growing family business, while also being in a military reserve service until 1961.

A consistent activist against  racial segregation, Jimmy Carter openly supported the growing civil rights movement. As a leader in the Democratic Party Jimmy Carter was elected as member of Georgia Senate and a Georgia Governor,  serving in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967 and as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.

President Jimmy Carter's  term in office, from Jan 1977 to Jan 1981, was  marked by major events and landmark decisions including the landmark peace accord between Egypt and Israel,  the Panama Canal agreement, dealing with US economy crisis and the  failed attempt to free American hostages seized in Iran.

Since becoming  the Governor of Georgia in 1970, Jimmy Carter took courageous actions, openly supporting of civil rights and challenging some of his supporters who opposed the civil rights movement. He placed the pictures of Martin Luther King on the walls of the capitol building, while members of the Ku Klux Klan demonstrated outside. He also made sure that African-Americans, who faced segregation,  and members of other underprivileged minority groups were appointed to public offices.

His passing was celebrated by several personalities and political leaders, including  other former US presidents,  US Senate and House of Representative congress leaders, and celebrities.

US President Joe Biden paid tribute to former President Jimmy  Carter  calling him "a man of principle, faith and humility".

President-elect Donald Trump said that  the challenges that late President Jimmy  Carter "faced as president came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude."

Former President Barack Obama wrote on social media: "Elected in the shadow of Watergate, Jimmy Carter promised voters that he would always tell the truth. And he did — advocating for the public good, consequences be damned.  He believed some things were more important than reelection — things like integrity, respect, and compassion. Because Jimmy Carter believed, as deeply as he believed anything, that we are all created in God’s image.”

Former President George  W Bush said in a statement that  "President Carter dignified the office. And his efforts to leave behind a better world didn’t end with the presidency. His work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center set an example of service that will inspire Americans for generations".

Former President Bill Clinton said in a statement  that “Guided by his faith, President Carter lived to serve others— until the very end.”

Jimmy Carter was the oldest living current or former US president. When his wife Rosalynn Carter passed away last year, she and  Jimmy Carter had been married for 77 years, the longest marriage of  a presidential couple in the world history.  He married his wife Roselyn in 1946 when in the U.S. Naval Academy.  Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter had four children, 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
