2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games have started, with close to 10,500 athletes from around the world ready to in 32 sports.
Stars around the World are gathering and ready to compete against the top ranked or beat their own records. Based on the past performances, AfroAmerica Network has selected a list of favorite players, gymnasts and athletes expected to make history. Below is a small sample.
American Cori Dionne "Coco" Gauff, 20, is a tennis player with seven career singles titles, including the 2023 US Open, and nine career doubles titles, including the 2024 French Open.
French Leon Marchand, 22, is five-time world champion swimmer. She is a world record holder, including the 400m broken in 2023 after being held by Michael Phelps forr 15 years
Kenyan Faith Kipyegon, 30, is a double Olympic 1500m champion and the world record holder for the 1,500 metres and mile, with two gold medals in 1500 and 5,000m, achieved 2023 World Championships.
American Simone Biles, 27, is the most decorated gymnast in the World championships history, the recipient of the US Medal of Freedom, and the first female gymnast to win six all-around world titles. She is the oldest female American gymnast to compete at the Olympics in 72 years. Expectations on Biles are high given the event in the Tokyo Olympics Games in 2021 after suffering with the 'twisties'
American Sunisa Lee, 21, is the reigning Olympic all-around champion, who overcame kidney disease and secured a spot on the US Olympics team. She was a member of the teams that won gold at the 2019 World Championships and silver at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

American Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky, 27, is seven Olympic gold medals and 21 world championship gold medals winner. She is the most female swimmer winner of in history. She also holds world record of 16 individual gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships.
Serbian Novak Djokovic, 37, is the 24 Tennis Grand slams singles winner. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics he failed to win the Olympic gold and the bronze medals. Now, all eyes are on hime as there are rumors that this may be his last competition before retirement.
American Noah Lyles, 27, is a track and field sprinter with 19.31 seconds in the 200 m, the American record and fourth fastest of all-time. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Lyles won a bronze medal in the 200 m. In 2023 World championships, Noah Lyles won the 200m, after winning the 100m, becoming the first man to sweep the 100m and 200m at a single World Athletics Championships since Usain Bolt in 2015. He will be competing in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
Jamaican Shericka Jackson, 30, won the women’s 200m with the second-fastest time in history. She is competing in the 60 m, 100 m, 200 m, and 400 metres. She is first athlete in World Championship history to win medals in the 100, 200 and 400 metres, including the 4x100 and 4x400 metres relays.
American Stephen Curry, 36, NBA great and Golden State Warriors point guard is in his Olympic Games debut in Paris. He will be on USA men's team that already holds 16 Olympic gold medals won every year since 2004.
American LeBron James, 39, the all-time NBA leading points scorer, is joining the Olympic Games for the first time since 2012.
American Kevin Durant,35, the Phoenix Suns continues his path with the possibility to become the first basketball male to win four basketball olympic gold medals, on top of the 2012, 2016 and 2020 medals. He is the leading scorer in Team USA's men's Olympic basketball history.
American Joel Embiid, 29, is making his USA Basketball debut. 76 ers player and reigning MVP, Joel Embiid chose to represent USA instead of his native Cameroon and France.
Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, 22, has made history winning 15 ATP Tour-level singles titles, including four Grand Slam titles and five Masters 1000 titles. Following his win at the 2022 US Open, Alcaraz became the youngest man and the first male teenager in the Open Era to top the singles rankings. In July 2024, he won, second year in a row, the Wimbledon title, defeating Novak Djokovic in a rematch of 2023 final. With the win in French Open in June 2026, he completed a Channel Slam.
