Major General Peter Cirimwami Nkuba, who was the military governor of North Kivu province in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), has died. He was injured during the combats opposing the Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF) reinforced by Ugandan People Defense Forces (UPDF) troops, under the cover of M23 Rebels, to the DR Congo troops (FARDC) supported by Wazalendo Patriot troops between the towns of Goma and Sake. He later died from the injuries. After the his death, the combats have continued and the DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi has announced an escalation and intensification of offensives against the RDF troops, by FARDC with the support from Southern African Development Community (SADC) forces.
After hours of reports in the media following a statement by M23 rebels claiming the killing of Major General Peter Cirimwami Nkuba, the death announcement was made public by General Sylvain Ekenge, the spokesperson for the FARDC, on Friday evening, January 24, 2025.
"He fell with a weapon in his hand on the field of honor. He was injured. We evacuated him and everything was done to ensure that he arrived in Kinshasa and was taken for appropriate care outside the country. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries," said General Sylvain Ekenge.
However, some sources in Kinshasa and Eastern DR Congo, have told AfroAmerica Network that the dynamics behind the death of Major General Peter Cirimwami are complicated and more than what has been reported or announced by the FARDC leaders and M23 rebels.
In fact, they have been rumors that he was suspected of working with the leaders of RDF commanders and, hence, being a traitor of the FARDC and behind the challenges faced by FARDC troops in combatting RDF under the cover of M23 rebels and their expanding conquests of territories. But others have said that these rumors were spread by agents working for the Rwandan government to tarnish his image.
Major General Peter Cirimwami was appointed the interim governor of North Kivu in October 2023, replacing Lieutenant General Constant Ndima, removed due to popular protests in which many protesters were killed.
Following the announcement, DRC President Félix Tshisekedi held an emergency meeting of the Superior Council of Defense at the African Union City in Kinshasa. He held the meeting upon returning to Kinshasa from Davos, Switzerland, after cutting short his schedule at the World Economic Forum as the security crisis and military confrotations between FARDC and RDF under the cover of M23 rebels have continued to escalate in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). His schedule in Davos was focusing on the “Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor” environment project.

During his message to the Superior Council of Defense and the Congolese people, President Félix Tshisekedi said the FARDC troops have been urged to keep the ground, stand firm and increase their defense efforts. “The President of the Republic has given firm instructions to track down the forces of aggression to their last stronghold and to push them far from Goma. It is a duty, it is an obligation, and this obligation is patriotic It is a duty, it is an obligation, and this obligation is patriotic,” General Sylvain Ekenge said, calling on the military to remain resolute and attack the “forces of aggression to their last stronghold and push them far from Goma" and drive them out of Congolese territory."
Meanwhile, Thérèse Kayikwamba, DR Congo Minister of Foreign Affairs, on a trip in New York City, New York, USA, has requested an emergency public session of the UN Security Council to address the worsening situation in North Kivu.
At the same time, MONUSCO, the UN peacekeeping mission in DRC, has reported that the fightings have led to the displacement of over 250,000 civilians, mostly fleeing toward Goma and the surrounding areas.
According to various sources in the area, since the killing of Major General Peter Cirimwami, the FARDC have changed their tactics. With the help of troops from SADEC, FARDC, using the new military tactics, have been allegedly able to kill or capture several reinforcement UPDF troops along with RDF troops. With the new tactics, SADC has deployed army special forces with helicopters and heavy artillery to halt the advance of RDF and UPDF reinforcement troops, under the cover of M23 rebels.
Meanwhile, Ugandan leaders, apparently in an anticipation of potential consequences of reinforcing the RDF troops invading Eastern DRC, have started to send messages that UPDF troops captured or killed on the frontline are deserters, as they crossed into Rwanda not into DR Congo (see Uganda - Rwanda - DR Congo: Uganda's UPDF Troops Crossing into Rwanda and Joining Rwandan Troops RDF Under Disguise).
