In 2022, like in 2020, Georgia was expected to play a major role in US politics. In 2020, Georgia played a major role in electing Joe Biden as the US President, and for Democrats to control the US Senate by electing 2 democratic candidates who won in the two runoff elections. In 2020-2021, the elections  in Georgia became the focus, as Black candidates managed to win several seats at the local level (see US-Georgia 2021 and 2022 Election: High Expectations on Black Democrats Rev Raphael Warnock, Stacey Abrams, and Andre Dickens) . Now, the focus is on the runoff election for the US Senate, between  Rev. Raphael Warnock, a democrat and Hershel Walker, a republican.

Since the end of the general election, Democrats are  guaranteed to control the US Senate, but with the help of the Vice-President. However,  if  Georgia elects Rev. Raphael Warnock, the Democrats will control 51 seats against 49 for the Republicans, hence controlling the US Senate, without the need for the Vice-President Kamala Harris' intervention to break the tie. The runoff election is scheduled for December 6, 2022, with the early voting starting on November 26, 2022.

During the midterm general elections, Democrats  managed to flip Pennsylvania’s GOP-held Senate seat and to defend the highly contested seats in Arizona and Nevada, hence scorring 50 seats.

Is Georgia still on the path to turning Blue? That remains the main question.

Rev. Raphael Warnock is trying to defend his seat in a race that has been very tight during the entire campaign. Hershel Walker,  a former NFL player and  with the support of ex-President Donald Trump has been a favorite of the Republican base.

In the last Georgia US Senate runoff elections held on January 5, 2021, Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock was able to beat Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler and Republican Senator David Perdue was ousted by Democrat Jon Ossoff. In the end, Georgia general and US Senate runoff elections were historic and fundamental in defining  the future of the US politics,  for the  following four years.   After the elections the major question was : Is Georgia finally turning Blue? That remains the question.

In fact, the answer was complicated by the recent elections in which  Stacey Yvonne Abrams (Stacey Yvonne Abrams: AfroAmerica Network Woman of Year 2018 unsuccesfully ran again against her long time rival, the current Governor, Brian Kemp. In 2018, Stacey Abrams, a Democrat, lost to Brian Kemp, a Republican, in a controversial election, narrowly losing by close to 55,000 votes. In 2022 elections, she lost with 45.9% vs 53.4% for Brian Kemp.

What was and remains noticeable is that Georgia may no longer be red.

Is Georgia Pushing Forward with Prominent Black Leaders?

The efforts by Georgia leaders, especially Stacey Yvonne Abrams, through Fair Fight Action, have changed the landscape, helping Joe Biden and Kamala Harris  to win  the state, and Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossof, democrats, to win U.S. Senate elections in 2020-2021. Since then, Black leaders have won several Mayor, House Representative and City Council elections. Among them are:

  • Andre Dickens, a Black Man, was elected Mayor of Atlanta Georgia, the 61st.  He has committed to focusing his efforts on social justice and fighting against inequality in economic opportunities by promoting equity between richer, whiter residents and poorer, Blacker Atlanta residents.
  • LaRhonda Patrick, a Black Woman is  the Mayor of Warner Robins.
  •  Former Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson, a Black Woman, was elected the Democratic member of Georgia House of Representatives for District 165, that includes Savannah.
  • Mario Avery, a Black man, is the mayor of Fairburn .
  • Khalid Kamau, a  Black man and former councilman and a prominent Democratic activist, was elected Mayor of South Fulton.
  • Angelyne Butler, a Black Woman,  was reelected Mayor of Forest Park.
