After close to a decade of ruling as prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as the leader of Canada's governing party, the Liberal Party. The resignations comes after weeks of controversy including the Canadian national budget and the policies of the US President-elect Donald Trump towards Canada. Justin Trudeau announced his resignation during a news conference in Ottawa, stating that he will stay on as Prime Minister until his replacement, a new Liberal Party leader, has been chosen.
Justin Trudeau, then a the youthful amateur boxer from an influential family, became Prime Minister in 2015, as the leader of the Liberal Party. He is the son of Pierre Trudeau, a figure that dominated the Canadian politics in the late 1960s and early 1970s (Justin Trudeau: A Progressive Canadian Prime Minister).
Since Summer 2024, Justin Trudeau has been facing opposition from his own Liberal Party, with calls to step down as a Prime Minister. The challenges from his party and the calls for his stepping down have led to the sudden and unexpected resignation of Chrystia Freeland, the finance minister and deputy prime minister in December 2024, due to a rift between her and Trudeau. Since then pressure has further grown on the prime minister from within his own party to step down.
In fact, his increasing challenges have led to a significant defeat of the candidates from the Liberal Party in recent elections in Toronto leading to the victory of the candidates from the Conservative Party.
Hence, the resignation was expected even though Justin Trudeau has been spreading the news of looking forward to being the leading candidate of the Liberal Party in the elections planned before the end of October 2025.
Justin Trudeau, who became Prime Minister in 2015, then 43 years-old, was then credited with running a campaign based on hope, promises of shifting the tax burden from middle class to the wealthy families, and running a budget deficit in order to improve Canadian infrastructure and to grow the employment. Although he may have achieved some of goals, his last days have been marked by critics of his leadership and the negative impacts of his policies and actions on the Canadian economy and social issues.

Justin Trudeau, has also been facing challenges from the upcoming US Government to be led by US-President elect Donald Trump, especially with the threats to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods, a major threat to the Canada’s economy, and labelling Justin Trudeau as the "governor" of the "Great State of Canada", instead of Prime Minister of the Country of Canada.
Immediately following Justin Trudeau's resignation plan announcement, US President-elect Donald Trump reinforced his take on Canada, posting , on his social media platform Truth Social, that "Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State ... If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!"
If Canada were to become the 51st US State, it would be a major world changing development. In fact, for those who do not know Canada's political system, the Head of State is the British monarch Charles III, who took over from the late Queen Elizabeth II. The British monarch is represented by a governor general. That is how far Canada is close to being a monarchy. But Canada is not a monarchy. The Canadian government is led by a Prime Minister. Justin Trudeau ascended to power, after securing a resounding victory over the Conservative government led by Stephen Harper, ending 9 years of reign.
Following Justin Trudeau's the decision to step down, many Liberal Party top leaders have given their views on social media and other media channels. Most of them appeared to wish that Justin Trudeau should have resigned early, to avoid such a climate unfavorable for the Liberal Party and the potential adverse effects on the Canadian People.
