Gov. Tim Walz, 60, was among the top candidates since Vice-President Harris succeeded President Joen Biden as the potential Democratic candidate in the 2024 US Presidential Elections.
He came at the top of five other contenders, including Governor Gavin Newsom of California, Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
As the deadline approached Vice-President Kamala Harris appeared to have narrowed her list of a vice presidential running mate to two finalists, Governor Tim Walz and Governor Josh Shapiro.
The announcement of the final selection was expected on Tuesday August 6, 2024, ahead of the first scheduled public appearance with her running mate scheduled in the evening at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Gov Tim Walz is in his second term as governor of Minnesota. Minnesota has been consistently won by Democrats in a series of presidential elections over decades but has lately become the target of the Republican candidate Donald Trump, with the aim to flip it in the upcoming elections. Gov Tim Walz had moved ahead as the favorite contender after calling the opponents "weird", which drew huge support from young voters.

Vice-President Kamala Harris and Gov Tim Walz: Different Backgrounds but Common Ideals..
Announcing the selection, Vice-President Kamala Harris said on social media X:
"I am proud to announce that I've asked @Tim_Walz to be my running mate. As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he's delivered for working families like his. It's great to have him on the team. Now let's get to work. ... one of the things that stood out to me about Tim is how his convictions on fighting for middle class families run deep."
"It’s personal. He grew up in a small town in Nebraska, spending summers working on his family’s farm. His father died of cancer when he was 19, and his family relied on Social Security survivor benefit checks to make ends meet. At 17, he enlisted in the National Guard, serving for 24 years. He used his GI Bill benefits to go to college, and become a teacher," she added.
During his speech at his first rally Tuesday with Vice President Kamala Harris in Philadelphia Gov Tim Walz, referring to the Republican candidates Donald Trump and JD Vance, went back to the term that made him very popular with the young people saying that: “These guys are creepy and yes, just weird as hell.” The reference drew many applauses.
He also said that he was ready to challenge JD Vance, saying “I can’t wait to debate the guy”.
During his remarks, Gov Tim Walz was using a jolly tone with a laughter and using popular expressions containing Midwestern dialect and words such as “damn well”, "say it with me", “come on”, “Say it with me! We are not going back,” “We’ve got 91 days. My god, that’s easy, “We’ll sleep when we’re dead.”
Durring their speeches, both Vice-President Kamala Harris and Gov Tim Walz, while emphasizing the different backgrounds, highlighted their common ideals and personalities and the way they views how others need to be treated saying:
Vice-President Kamala Harris said: “After all, the promise of America is what makes it possible for two middle-class kids, to make it all the way to the White House. ... Coach Walz and I may come from different corners of our country,” she said, “but we believe in picking people up not knocking them down.”
Gov Tim Walz added: “My mom and dad taught us to show generosity towards our neighbors and work for a common good.”.
His remaks were received with chants from the audience.

On Monday night, Vice-President Kamala Harris Harris officially secured the delegates needed to become the party’s presidential nominee, as announced by Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison and Minyon Moore, chair of Democrats’ upcoming convention.
Since the selection of Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, Vice-President Kamala Harris' campaign has secured records fundraising, adding more than $20 million in a few hours.

They are now ready to faces off against former President Trump and JD Vance in the 2024.
