The much anticipated first debate between US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump occurred on Thursday, June 27, 2024 from 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM EST in Atlanta, Georgia. However, as expected the highlights were more on the drama, the distanced skirmishes and the clashes between the two US presidential candidates, marked by bitter attacks, demeaning each other and strong stances. This time, the debate organizers did not allow talking over each other as it happened in previous debates when the behaviors led to an apparent dismay of the debate moderators and the impression of comic acts. But still, some dramatic moments were unavoidable.
The debate was held in CNN Studio, Atlanta, Georgia, hosted by CNN. CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash served as the debate moderators.
During the debate there was no studio audience for the debate and, unlike in the last debates, each candidate’s microphone was be muted while the opponent has the turn to speak.
The debate is a third rematch for Joe Biden and Donald Trump. They faced each other twice in 2020. The debate happened during a period with major controversial dynamics shaping a widely different political landscape with new challenges for the two candidates. Former President Donald Trump is facing two pending criminal prosecutions related to the Republican’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential elections, when the Democrat Joe Biden won the elections.
Former President Donald Trump arrived in Atlanta Airport around 5:30 p.m. As he exited the plane, he was raising his fist and clapping his hands, while heading to his motorcycle without greeting the hundreds of his supporters welcoming for him.
President Joe Biden had a different arrival. He arrived in Air Force One around 3:15 p.m. As he exited he went on to greet his applauding supporters on the tarmac. He then went on to shake hands with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, former Atlanta mayors Keisha Lance Bottoms and Stacey Abrams and Jason Carter, Jimmy Carter's grandson.
Below are the major points that marked the evening.

Moderators in control of the debaters.
Almost at the onset, the candidates were slamming each other’s records on the economy, immigration and abortion rights.
The debate moderators Dana Bash and Jake Tapper had a control on the flow of the debate, the questions and the timing, given the hold on whose microphone was unmuted. But they couldn't control the tone of the debate. The questions were in general well pointed.
During the debate the voice of President Biden appeared to have a few challenges, sounding hoarse and raspy.
Intense and Dramatic Debate that Left Critical Questions.
The intense head-to-head debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump covered a range of topics and claims. Among them are:
- Roe v. Wade case and abortion regulations;
- Immigration policies, family separation, and border deals;
- Inflation, tax, and economic growth;
- Wars in Ukraine, Middle-East;
- Fate of Social Security and Medicare;
- Trump's legal issues and January 6 attack on US Capitol;
- What is expected after the November 2024 elections.
The stumbling performance by President Joe Biden has raised concerns among Democrats, with mostly the answers at the start of the debate being questionable and the continued stumbling and some incoherence until the end pushing for calls for a potential replacement.
Hence, based on several reactions in main and social media, democrats and other voters have been wondering whether President Joe Biden could step down and be replaced as the party’s presidential candidate. Some names are already in conversations.
In Summary, Donald Trump's attacks have consistently focused on Joe Biden's economy and inflation and his foreign affairs policy record, while Joe Biden focused on Donald Trump's legal issues, including criminal conviction and alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
They also had back-and-forth arguments on who is telling the truth, who was lying and who had more integrity. Donald Trump was challenged about his repeated falsehoods, especially regarding abortion, taxes, economy deficit, and immigration and avoiding at first to answer whether, contrary to 2020, he would accept the 2024 election results.
At some point, Joe Biden called Donald Trump a "sucker" and a "loser," saying "you are a sucker, you are a looser" with the "morals of an alley cat".
Donald Trump often mocked Joe Biden and said at one point: "I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence, and I don’t think he did either".
After the challenging debate, the main question has become: Will Joe Biden stay as a candidate? How about Donald Trump? If they step down, who would be designated as their replacements.
