It was through chants of "Jill Not Hill", "No More War" , and "No TPP" that Green Party members, backers, and enthusiasts put a stamp on the nomination of Green Party presidential candidate, Dr. Jill Stein, at the end of the Convention in Houston, on August 6th, 2016. With many attendees holding signs similar to ones that Sanders supporters waved as they disrupted the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Green Party members vowed to continue the "Revolution". However the highlight of the Convention was reached when Julian Assange, the controversial WikiLeaks founder, addressed the Green Party convention via satellite from the Embassy of Ecuador in London. He has been living in the embassy for the past four years, to fight extradition to Sweden over sexual assault allegations.
"You're asking me if I prefer cholera or gonorrhea," Julian Assange, who was introduced as a "hero", responded to a question asking him to choose
between Clinton or Trump.
In July 2016, WikiLeaks released around 20,000 emails that appeared to show the committee favoring presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders, during the primary season. The disclosure led to the resignation of DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (see here) and the firing of several top DNC officials. During the intervention, Julian Assange also attacked Sillicon Valley's dominance, alleging that this dominance threatens the future of humanity. He said that Sillicon Valley titans, such as Google and others have "a very strange, quasi-religious vision of the future...This vision of the singularity ... It's very disturbing what they believe in Silicon Valley. They believe they can create a massive artificial intelligence more powerful than any human being."
Julian Assange warned of the powerful and "extremely worrying" triumvirate among a Clinton's White House, the Pentagon, and Google.
Green Party hopes to wow Sanders' followers, as Jill Stein needs 15% in polls to be allowed in general elections debates. She currently polls at 5% in most surveys of likely voters. However, the same surveys show that around 83% of Sanders' likely voters may have switched their intentions to supporting Hillary Clinton. Although it is too early to make final conclusions, the polls predict an uphill road for Dr Jill Stein. Within the Green Party also, not everything appears rosy.
Jill Stein's challenger, Sedinam Kinamo Christin Moyowasifza-Curry, has been vocal against the Green Party nomination process. After losing to Jill Stein, she complained of bias against her, as a black Muslim woman, and called Jill Stein a "privileged older woman" in a press conference earlier Saturday, dropping the microphone in a dramatic show of frustration.
