On Tuesday February 2, 2022 (2/2/22) the jury convicted the three white men accused of murdering 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed Black young man, while he was just on his routine jogging. The verdict confirmed what has been known all long: Ahmaud Arbery Was Murdered for "Jogging While Black" by white men known for pervasive racist behaviors.
The jury found the three men guilty of federal hate crimes. Three white men, Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan, were found guilty on several different counts. Ahmaud Arbery was murdered in Brunswick, GA, on Feb. 23, 2020. The verdict on federal crimes was then delivered on the eve of the second anniversary of Arbery’s death ( see Brunswick - Georgia - USA: Ahmaud Arbery Was Murdered for "Jogging While Black" According to Conviction). The jury was composed by 11 people: eight Whites, three Blacks, and one Hispanic. The jurors deliberated for three hours on Monday, Feb 21, 2022 and 1 hour on Tuesday morning, to reach a verdict.

Reacting on the verdict, Ahmaud Arbery's mother Wanda Cooper-Jones told the media: "Ahmaud will continue to rest in peace. But he will now begin to rest in power."
“We as a family will never get victory because Ahmaud is gone forever,” she added.
Arbery Sr. said: “Ahmaud was a kid you can’t replace, because of the heart he had ... I’m struggling with that every day...It hurts me every day.”
The family attorney, Ben Crump said: “for many of us, there was never any doubt that Greg McMichael, Travis McMichael, and William Bryan targeted Ahmaud because of his skin color. But because of indisputable video evidence, disgusting messages sent by the defendants, and witness testimony, their hate was revealed to the world and the jury."
The case for hate crime charges was supported by hard evidences, including actions and statements from the killers. The prosecutors showed a large number of text messages and social media posts in which Travis McMichael and Bryan used racist slurs and made derogatory comments about Black people.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted that the verdict “makes clear that the Justice Department will continue to use every resource at its disposal to confront unlawful acts of hate and to hold accountable those who perpetrate them.”
The case has give hope for other Black cases now in courts around the country (see Celebrate 2022 Black History Month: Voting Rights, Critical Race Theory and Remembering George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Rayshard Brooks).
