ONovember 2021 local and gubernatorial polls in the US closed in several areas across the nation on Tuesday Nov 2, evening. Then the counting started with much hopes from all sides. By Wednesday morning, as some results were being projected, two trends were clear. First, people of color, including Blacks, Asians, and Hispanics won local elections in historic firsts. Second, Republicans won or challenged democrates in states where Democrats have been winning for decades
People of Color Score Big in Local Elections.
Across the US, people of color won local elections, in areas usually dominated by White candidates, marking the historic firsts or breaking the trends.
In New York City (NYC), Eric Adams, a black and retired police officer won the mayoral election. He defeated the Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, an activist and radio talk show host. Eric Adams, although sometimes criticized of not being very specific about his agenda has vowed to prioritize the needs of working and middle-class voters of color.
Also, in NYC, Alvin Bragg was elected the first Black Manhattan District Attorney (DA)
Alvin Bragg, who beat the Republican opponent, Thomas Kenniff, will oversee cases, including those of prominent figures such as Donald Tump is his family, in the lagest districts in the USA.
In Boston, the new mayor will be Michelle Wu, 36, currently a City council member. Michelle Wu, an Asian-American whose parents emigrated in US from Taiwan, will take over from acting mayor, Kim Janey, a Black woman, who was appointed when previously elected Mayor Marty Walsh stepped down to join President Joe Biden's administration as U.S. Secretary of Labor. Michelle Wu will be the first woman and person of color elected as Boston Mayor.
Michell Wu's agenda includes affordable housing, public education, transportation, racial justice, crime and policing reform. He defeated the Republican Tony Moreno, promising to fight for racial justice and policing reform, especially referring to the murder of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis, MN, in May 2020 and the protests to ask for racial justice that followed.
Democrat Aftab Karma Singh Pureval, 39, becomes first Asian-American mayor of Cincinnati, OH. His parents were both immigrants; his father from India, and his mother, a refugee from Tibet. Democrat Abdullah Hammoud, 31, was elected mayor of Dearborn, Michigan. He will become the first Arab American mayor of the city, after beating the former state representative Gary Woronchak. He promised to prioritise infrastructure issues.
Surprises in Gubernatorial Elections.
More surprises came in gubernatorial elections and Democats were shocked. Republicans were very pleased with the election results in Virginia. Republican Glenn Youngkin won the Virginia governor's race Tuesday over former Governor Terry McAuliffe.
Glenn Youngkin's victory over Terry McAuliffe came as a choc for Democrats in a state President Biden won by 10 points in 2020. The win sent a chock to Democrats, alarmed that their grip on power in Washington may be at risk.
In his victory speech, Glenn Youngkin said: "Together, together, we will change the trajectory of this commonwealth. And friends, we are going to start that transformation on day one. There is no time to waste. Our kids can't wait, we work in real-people time, not government time. So on day one, we're going to work. We're going to restore excellence in our schools."
As of mid-Wednesday, Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey remained in a close race for reelection.
