Today, Friday, January 15th, 2016 would have been Martin Luther King Jr.’s 87th birthday.
Since Martin Luther King Jr's death, the Black Community and the minorities have accomplished a lot. They have managed to reach the highest office, have the right to vote, have representatives in all the institutions of the government, and a growing influence in the economic sectors. However some issues remain. According to Dr Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., despite having
President Obama as the first Black or minority president of the Greatest Nation in the World, now in office for 7 years, African-American and Black communities still face issues. The most pressing issue, according to Dr Bernice King is the generational divide.
But also, there still are major unresolved issues that Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was fighting against, such as the equitable distribution of wealth, racial divide, inclusiveness and unfettered right to vote.
That is why, as President Obama said during the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Selma March, "our march is not yet finished, but we’re getting closer."
Yes, the march and struggle initiated by Dr Martin Luther King Jr's is not yet finished, even as we commemorate his 87th birthday.
