The much anticipated first debate between US Vice-President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump occurred on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 from 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM EST in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As expected, the highlights were more on the drama, the distanced skirmishes and the clashes between the two US presidential candidates. The debate, the first in their campaign since US President Joe Biden dropped out, was feisty, focusing on sharing personal insults and criticisms over their policies. This time again, the debate organizers did not allow talking over each other, but the candidates seemed eager to step in and talk over each other. Some facial reactions gave the impression of comic acts and some dramatic moments became unavoidable.
The debate was held in Philadelphia's National Constitution Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, hosted by ABC News. ABC News anchors John Muir and Linsey Davis served as the debate moderators. The debate was marked by bitter attacks, demeaning each other, and strong stances. After the debate, the consensus from both Democrats and Republicans was that Kamala Harris won and did better than it was expected before the debate started.
As the debate started, Kamala Harris went all way to Donald Trump's stand and shook his hands. But that was the only moment they seemed to bond.
During the debate each candidate’s microphone was be muted while the opponent has the turn to speak. The debate seemed to be a combination of political rivalry, comics moments, and personal attacks.
Kamala Harris pointed to all the controversial past behaviors, comments, and stances by Donald Trump. These comments appeared to draw the ire from Donald Trump and, in some moments, to lead him off the key topics.
Some key controversial moments that shocked the viewers and seemed to push Donald Trump to the edge were the treatment of Blacks in his real-estate properties and false accusation of murders , the conduct during the January 6 2021 the Capitol riot, the size of Donald Trump's rally crowds, the denial of Kamala Harris's blackness, and the distance of the Republican officials who served in Donald Trump's administration who have become prominent outspoken critics of his campaign.
One shocking moment came when ABC anchors, building on Kamala Harris' statements, challenged Donald Trump on a false debunked report by Donald Trump's running mate J.D. Vance that Haitian immigrants in the town of Springfield, Ohio, have been abducting and eating their neighbors’ pets, including dogs and cats.
Once again, a dilemma on the foreign policy, was apparent. Like in the last DNC and RNC conventions, the debate on the foreign policies of the two candidates focused on Israel and Gaza war, Ukraine wars, dictators in Asia, and immigration from South America. But nowhere Africa was mentioned. None of the two candidate mentioned Africa at all despite on-going wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Mali, Niger, etc...
In fact, Africa has become the battleground of world super powers, multinational companies, and powerful individuals, due to its wealth in mineral and natural resources, including Cobalt, Lithium, oil, gold, diamond, uranium, rare woods, and others fueling world economies. Moderators in control of the debaters.
Almost at the onset, the candidates were slamming each other’s records on the economy, immigration and abortion rights.
The debate moderators ABC News anchors John Muir and Linsey Davis had a control on the flow of the debate, the questions and the timing, given the hold on whose microphone was unmuted. But, as expected they couldn't control the tone of the debate. The questions were in general well pointed and they anchors at some points challenged some of the answers, especially from Donald Trump.
During the debate Former President Donald Trumps appeared very upset on Kamala Harris and the anchors, while Kamala Harris seemed consistently mocking Donald Trump.
Intense and Dramatic Debate that Left Critical Questions.
The intense head-to-head debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice-President Kamala Harris covered a range of topics and claims. Among them are:
- Inflation, tax, and economic growth;
- Roe v. Wade case and abortion regulations;
- Immigration policies, family separation, and border deals;
- Wars in Ukraine and Middle-East;
- Fate of Social Security and Medicare;
- Trump's legal issues and January 6 attack on US Capitol;
- Trump's statements claiming that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, have been eating their neighbors pets, including dogs, cats, and other;
- Trump's statements claiming that Kamala Harris was not a black and was a daughter of a marxist professor.
The main challenge from both sides was that they did not go into the detail of their policies, what they will do if elected and how they plan to do it.
In the end, Kamala Harris seemed to have featured a better performance while Donald Trump struggled to defend himself on his past controversial behaviors and statements.
After the challenging debate, the main question has become: Will Kamala Harris' performance significantly improve her polls? How about Donald Trump?
