Since Friday Feb 9, 2024 Congolese protesters in Kinshasa have been calling on the West to stop supporting the invasion of Eastern DR Congo by Rwandan troops, under the cover of M23 rebels. As the Congolese police has been trying to control the protests and avoid violence, two developments happened. Despite the denials by Rwandan dictator Paul Kagame and his ministers, a new United Nations document revealed that M23 rebels are using arms provided by the Rwandan government and military. Then, South African government confirmed its decision to deploy more troops to increase its contribution to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) force, to fight armed groups in eastern Congo.
The congolese protestors have been targeting embassies of the Westen countries, including the USA, UK, France, and Belgium and UN Offices in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They have been burning flags and tyres near and in front of the embassies of the Western countries
To disperse the protesters and prevent violence, the Congolese police has been firing tear gas. However, some Congolese leaders and independent observers have been expecting these reactions given the mounting anger of Congolese population about the worsening insecurity in Eastern DR Congo.
The protesters have accused the Western governments of failing to use their indisputable powerful influence over the government and military of the neighboring Rwanda to stop the invasion, widespread massacres, humanitarian tragedy and war crimes, of Eastern DR Congo.
Since the invasion, the Rwanda government and its military have been widely accused of being behind the war, using the cover M23 rebel group. The Rwandan government has denied the accusations.

According to a leaked United Nations document and news from AFP, the Rwandan troops under the cover of M23 rebels have fired at least one surface-to-air missile. In the document, it is also stated that “presumed surface-to-air missile from the Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF)” targeted a drone of the UN observation on 6 February, without success and that “French external military intelligence confirms that the WZ551 type armoured vehicle, equipped with a surface-to-air missile system, is Rwandan.”
Meanwhile, the South African president's office said in a statement on Monday that South Africa has decided to deploy 2,900 troops as part of its contribution to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) force, to fight armed groups in eastern Congo. The troops will be deploying along those from Tanzania and Malawi.
The troops will be deployed for one year between Dec. 15. 2023 and Dec. 15, 2024, and will cost around 2 billion rand ($105.75 million).
