The Kansas City Chiefs have beaten Philadelphia Eagles at State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona – the home stadium of the Arizona Cardinals, to win the Super Bowl 57 (LVII) and the 2023 NFL championship. With the win, the Kansas City Chiefs have secured the third Super Bowl title in NFL franchise history. For the first time, the two quarterbacks were Black: Jalen Hurts, QB, Philadelphia Eagles and Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs. A highly anticipated event marked NFL Superbowl: the half-time performance by the star Rihanna, her first live performance in over five years.
It was the fifth Super Bowl for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Kansas City Chiefs won in Super Bowls IV (4) and LIV (54), lost in Super Bowls I (1)and LV (55). The Chiefs also won the American Football League championship in 1962.
For the Philadelphia Eagles, this was the fourth Super Bowl. Philadelphia Eagles won in Super Bowl LII (52) and lost in Super Bowls XV (15) and XXXIX (39). They also won three pre-Super Bowl NFL championships in 1948, 1949, and 1960.
The top candidates for MVP title from the two teams were the two quarterbacks: Jalen Hurts, QB, Philadelphia Eagles and Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs, both black. Patrick Mahomes was looking to become the first player to win the league MVP and the Super Bowl in the same year since 1999.
The competition between the two team was a large picture of the rivarly between their two quarterbacks. For the Kansas City, the win was expected to be their second ring in four years, and Patrick Mahomes hoped to lead his team to a repeat of its 2019 victory.
The Philadelphia Eagles expected to win thei second Super Bowl trophy in the franchise histore, counting on the newcomer Jalen Hurts.
Both teams were at the top of their conferences at the start of the playoffs for 2022-2023 season. In the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles went into the playoffs ranking the No. 1 seed, whereas in the AFC, the Chiefs entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. In their first playoff matchup , the Philadelphia Eagles went against their NFC East rival New York Giants. The Chiefs entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the AFC. The Philadelphia Eagles dominated from the beginning with a very well organized defensive line. By the second quarter, they had scored 14 -7. However, the Kansas City Chiefs maintained their challenged. Due to a fumble recovered by Nick Bolton, Kansas City Chiefs outsmarted by the Philadelphia Eagles, to score a touchdown, equaling the game to 14-14.
Then, QB Jalen Hurtstook an advantage and scored a rush trouchdown before the end of the 2nd quarter. The touchdown was followed by another 3 points score by the team. By the half-time the score was Eagles, 24 vs Chiefs, 14.
As expected, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes delivered an outstanding performance. However, late in the second quarter, Patrick Mahomes limped off the field after being tackled around the legs and looked to be in some pain on the sideline. This may be the effects of the high ankle sprain suffered in the playoffs against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He came back in the second half with a clear strategy to protect his ankle. By the third quarter, the score was Eagles, 24 vs Chiefs, 21, with Patrick Mahomes maintaining the momentum, with the outstanding performance of the receiver Kadarius Toney.
In the early fourth quartter, Kadarius Toney returned a punt 65 yards, to set up the Chiefs for a red-zone opportunity, the longest punt return in Super Bowl history. The Kansas Chiefs took advantage of the field position, with Patrick Mahomes hitting Skyy Moore for a four-yard touchdown reception and Kansas City led 35-27.
The Eagles then seemed to wake up and quickly tied the game, 35-35. Eagles QB Jalen Hurts was quick to score his 3rd rushing touchdow a playoff game, a match of Otto Graham's 1954 NFL Championship Game.
But it was too late as they could not hold the offense by the Chiefs. The Chiefs were able to score a field goal, 8 seconds before the end of the game, winning with 38-35. The Eagles needed some magic that did not happen.
Kansas Chiefs won the Super Bowl LVII and Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl LVII MVP, three years after after being named the MVP of Super Bowl LIV.
The 2023 Super Bowl 57 halftime show was led by Rihanna. It was another epic Super Bowl halftime show performance. The show was impressive, with lights, fireworks, and dancers performing on the hits by the Rihanna, and was just an outstanding performance. The performance generated several comments on social media, with the main trend being that this was another first, especially as Rihanna appeared to slightly send messages to her fans, allegedly pointing to her pregnancy.
