She has experience in development cooperation, humanitarian organizations, and peacekeeping missions, having worked for the United Nations, Oxfam, and  German International Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ). She also knows the political and social dynamics in Rwanda very well as at some time during her career, she was based in Kigali, Rwanda.

In May 2024, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Francophonie of the DR Congo and took office on June 13, 2024.

With her experience working for international organizations in Rwanda and Eastern Congo, she has unique knowledge about the political dynamics in Rwanda and Eastern DR Congo, including the actors, their interests, and their strategies and actions.
Hense she has been many miles ahead on the ongoing security and humanitarian situation in the Eastern DR Congo.

Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner: Unwavering Commitment to Peace in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

Her intervention at the United Nations Security Councils meeting on the situation in Eastern DR Congo have been outstanding. The focus of her intervention has been consistently on the need for “concrete action" and the fact that “What really this means is to have the evidence that this is not a cosmetic fix.”

Her interventions have been heard. The  governments of the US, EU, UK, and other countries have made steps imposing sanctions or taking other measures in preparation for specific sanctions against individuals or entities.(see UN - USA - Rwanda-DR Congo: UN Security Council Condemns the Invasion of DR Congo by Rwanda, Fueling Political Dynamics in Rwanda).

With  the diplomatic performance  of Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, the eyes are now on the upcoming sanctions by world powers and institutions against Rwandan government and military leaders and entities connected to the human tragedies and the looting of mineral in the DR Congo.
