Tanzania's incumbent President John Magufuli of the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has been re-elected for a second term with more than 84% of the vote, the Tanzania Electoral Commission has announced. President Magufuli, 61, defeated 14 other candidates, including the main opposition leader Tundu Lissu, from Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) party, who won 13% of the vote. Burundi's Supreme Court of Justice has condemned. "in absentia" the former President Pierre Buyoya, 70, and 18 other defendants following the trial for the assassination of Melchior Ndadaye, the first democratically elected Hutu president. Melchior Ndadaye was killed in October 1993, just 102 days after he took power, after defeating Pierre Buyoya, in the first democratic elections in Burundi.

On November 21, 2017, AfroAmerica Network pointed to a major event that appeared to signal the dawn of a new era in Africa: President Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco, nicknamed "JLo", hand-picked by then President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos to replace him, won presidential elections. He was viewed as the continuation of the Dos Santos' legacy. Less than 3 years later, President Joao Lourenco has changed the system and  started cracking down on pervasive corruption, targeting top leaders and personalities, including the closest aides, the family members and the relatives of former President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos.

Rwandan Dictator General Paul Kagame has been conspicuously missing from the public eye since April 2020. His absence has sparked and fueled rumors about declining health and even incapacitation.  On October 24, 2015, US Government Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Sarah Sewall during her trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo warned Paul Kagame against clinging to power (see AfroAmerica Network: US Government Against Attempts by Rwandan Paul Kagame to Cling to Power). Since then, General  Paul Kagame ignored the warnings and become president. His healthcare conditions have opened new options to clinging to power, through his daughter Ange Kagame.

Sudan dictator Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir has been deposed. He was featured among AfroAmerica Network African ruthless dictators of 2018 (see AfroAmerica Network African Dictators Who Mattered In 2018: Congolese Joseph Kabila, Rwandan Paul Kagame, Ugandan Yoweri Museveni of Dec 27, 2018). Women played a major role in deposing one of the most feared and entrenched African dictators.

March 20, 2019 was declared by the United Nations as the International Day of Happiness.  On that day, the World Happiness Report is  released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations. The report ranks the countries based on how happy their people are.
