March 5, 2024 is Super Tuesday. Super Tuesday is when a large number of US states hold votes in the presidential primary election. Voters in 15 states and one US territory are choosing the candidates for president. The candidates are from the major two political parties and include a few independents.
The states that are holding elections in the presidential primary are Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia. Caucuses are also held in the US territory of American Samoa.
The GOP Republican party primary elections are being held in all of the 15 states. The Democrats primary elections are being held in 14 states and the US territory of American Samoa, not in Alaska and Democrats are also still waiting for the results in Iowa that were held by post.
Republicans are holding caucuses in Alaska and Utah, whereas Democrats are holding caucuses in the following the U.S. territory of American Samoa.
The elections on this Super Tuesday are likely expected to determine the potential candidates of the two main parties in the November 2024 general elections. In fact, around one-third of total delegates, 865 for GOP and at least 1,420 Democrats, are on the line. The elections will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of both candidates.

Based on early projections it appears Joe Biden and Donald Trump will be the winning candidates and there may be a repeat of the 2020 dynamics (see here: US 2020 Presidential Elections: First Debate Marred by Clashes and Showdown between President Trump and Former Vice-President Joe Biden).
To win the nomination, a minimum of 1,215 delegates are needed for the Republicans, and 1,968 delegates for the Democrats.
For the GOP Republicans, Donald Trump is facing Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, with respectively 273 and 43 delegates as the Super Tuesday elections started. Just before the Super Tuesday, Nikki Haley won her first contest in Washington D.C.’s primary on Sunday, getting 63 percent of the votes to 33 percent for Trump, and winning all of the Washington D.C. delegates.
With D.C. performance, Nikki Haley has become the first woman to win a Republican primary in U.S. history, according to political analysts. Washington DC Republican primary elections followed three wins by Donald Trump in Missouri, Michigan and Idaho.
AfroAmerica Network is closely following the elections.
