As Q4 2023 started, the declines at the end of Q3 2023 appeared to be slowing down. However, the challenges remain, with the stocks and indices ending the second week of Q4 2023 with mixed performances. The stock market appears to experience the previous dynamics leading increasing market volatility, due to inflation, world events, and other challenges since late Q2 2022. Q4 2023 has already been pushing forward with resilience, after a period with complex dynamics and given the current market factors, including the wars around the World, the US political situation, inflation and interest rates, and earnings seasons. The stock market experienced an upward momentum in the first week of Q4 2023. However, in the second week, there were some unexpected world challenges with potential impact on Oil prices, technology, inflation, consumer confidence, and the projections following the upcoming earnings reports.
On earnings side, major banks have beat expectations in Q3 2023. These include the three of the Big Four banks, JPMorgan (JPC), Citigroup (C), and Wells Fargo (WFC), beating expectations in their third-quarter earnings.
Bank of America (BAC), Goldman Sachs (GS), Morgan Stanley (MS), and American Express (AXP) will report their earnings next week. Also, next week, other highly visible companies, including the tech Tesla (TSLA), Netflix (NFLX), Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT), and AT&T (T) will also report their earnings.
In electric vehicles (EV), the sales in the US have reached 300,000 in Q3 2023, with the share of TSLA significantly declining. TSLA has been fighting off the competition on a price and plans to maintain its shrinking dominance with the launch of its Cybertruck electric pickup truck in Q4 2023.
Some big Pharma and Consumer Health companies, including Johnson and Johnson (JNJ), and The Procter and Gamble (PG) will be reporting earnings.
Over the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) increased by 0.81%, the Nasdaq (^IXIC) fell 0.52%, and S&P 500 (^GSPC) rose by 0.45%.
