WWDC 2017 Recap: Apple Unveils New iMaCs Pro, iPad Pro, Mac OS High Sierra, HomePod, and More

On Monday June 5, 2017 Apple kicked off its annual three-day Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) conference San Jose, California. During the conference, Apple unveiled a number of new products and operating system applications, including  a smart speaker, a new iMac Pro, and a new peer-to-peer Apple Pay and  a deal to bring Amazon video content to Apple TV.

Among the products and innovations unveiled are:

  • A "breakthrough home speaker", activated by Siri Home and known as HomePod. This will compete against Amazon's Echo and Sonos. It will cost $349 and ship in December
  • iMacs, with Virtual reality (VR) capabilities and USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • Mac OS X, known as High Sierra, staring with 10.13 revision.  Mac OS X High Sierra will be able to support external cards and VR and the Apple File System (APFS), as a default
  • iMac Pro marketed as  the most powerful Mac ever built, with up to 18-core Xeon processors and 128 GB of ECC memory, available in December 2017. The starting price will be $4,999
  • iOS 11 with P2P Apple Pay, new sound for Siri, AirPlay 2, Control Center with deep 3D, new file system management similar to Mac Finder. Notes and mail improvement.
  • 10.5 inch iPad Pro,  with refresh rate of 120Hz up from 60Hz, True tone display, up to 600 nits brightness and HDR video. Similar updates for iPad Pro 12.9-inch.
  • Apple Pencil with 20ms latency, the industry best
  • watchOS 4 for Apple Watch with Siri watch face, and the capability to connect with gym equipment and sync multiple playslists. Vertical dock, redesigned music app, enhanced workout, new monthly activity challenges.
  • Apple Music has reached 27 million subscribers
  • Apple Map wil have posted speed limits and lane guidance
  • Refreshes of 21.5 and 27 -Inch iMacs with brighter displays, Kaby Lake processors, and faster storage.
